Shine Bright Like A Diamond: The Barbados Independence Crisis

Barbados, meaning “the Bearded ones,” also known as the Land of the Flying Fish, is rapidly zooming to becoming a republic after gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. It is September 2021, and the deal must be in place by November for the anniversary of independence.

How will they accomplish this task? Delegates to this committee will decide who, what, when, where, why, and how to transition Barbados to truly become independent, and thus the Republic of Barbados. Delegates will have to come to a broad consensus and compromise from a whole host of interests, including but not limited to Republicans (pro-Republic), Monarchists, the current Head of Government and the opposing Head of State, as well as the Barbadian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, more commonly known as the actor, singer, and businesswoman Rihanna, to decide what does an independent Barbados look like.

It has taken over 50 years for an agreement to be reached, with many questions still unanswered: Will they make it in time for November?  Who would be the new Head of State? Will we create one, or would it be the Head of Government? Who is going to vote on this—the people or Members of Parliament? Would it be a simple majority or a supermajority? What role, if any, would go to the island’s most famous export, Rihanna? To what extent will the lives of Barbadians change? These will be just some of the questions that this committee will have to contend with in discussing the island’s future.
